Heavy-Duty Clutch Replacement
A slipping clutch, a clutch brake that won’t release cleanly, or a shudder on takeoff usually means the clutch assembly has worn past adjustment. We confirm it’s the clutch and not something else in the drivetrain before replacing it.
Symptoms we see
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Clutch slipping under load, especially on grades | Worn clutch disc past its friction material | Inspect disc wear and pressure plate condition to confirm before replacement |
| Shudder or vibration on takeoff from a stop | Worn or glazed clutch disc, or a worn pilot bearing | Inspect the clutch assembly and pilot bearing together — they often wear at the same time |
| Clutch brake won’t stop the shaft for a clean shift into gear | Worn or damaged clutch brake | Inspect and replace the clutch brake, usually done at the same time as a clutch job |
| Grinding when shifting from neutral into gear | Worn clutch brake or improper clutch adjustment | Check adjustment first, replace the clutch brake if worn |

What the job involves
We inspect disc wear, pressure plate condition, and the pilot bearing together — replacing just the disc when the pressure plate or bearing is also worn leads to a comeback.
Clutch brake condition gets checked at the same time, since it’s a common secondary failure and cheap to replace while everything else is already apart.
Flywheel resurfacing gets evaluated too — a scored or warped flywheel will wear a new clutch disc prematurely.
We adjust everything to spec before the truck goes back out, since improper adjustment is one of the most common causes of a repeat clutch failure.
What drives the cost
What this costs depends on whether it’s the disc alone or the full assembly (pressure plate, pilot bearing, clutch brake), whether the flywheel needs resurfacing, and clutch size and type (15.5-inch or 14-inch, ceramic or organic). We tell you after we look at it, before we start.
Common questions
How do I know if it’s the clutch or the transmission?
A slipping or shuddering complaint usually points to the clutch. Jumping out of gear or grinding while already in motion points more toward the transmission. We check both.
Should I replace just the disc or the whole assembly?
Depends on the condition of the pressure plate and pilot bearing. We inspect all of it before deciding, since replacing just the disc when the rest is worn causes a comeback.
What causes premature clutch wear?
Riding the clutch, aggressive takeoffs, or a scored/warped flywheel wearing the new disc down faster than normal.
How long does a clutch replacement take?
Depends on what else we find once it’s apart — pressure plate, pilot bearing, and flywheel condition all factor in.
What does a clutch replacement cost?
Depends on clutch size, type, and whether the flywheel needs resurfacing. We quote after inspection.
