Heavy-Duty Truck Diagnostics
A fault code tells you which circuit has a problem, not which part to replace — and swapping parts against a code is how shops waste your money. We read the code with the right tool for your platform and trace it to the actual cause.
Symptoms we see
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Check engine light or dash warning, no obvious symptom | Could be dozens of things — the code narrows it, doesn’t diagnose it | Pull the SPN/FMI code with the platform’s diagnostic tool and trace it to the circuit |
| Same fault code returns after a part was replaced elsewhere | The wrong component was replaced — the code pointed to a circuit, not that specific part | Re-trace the circuit from the code before replacing anything else |
| Multiple unrelated codes at once | Often a wiring, ground, or communication network (J1939) issue affecting multiple systems | Check grounds and network communication before chasing each code individually |
| Intermittent fault that won’t reproduce in the shop | Vibration-related connector or wiring issue | Inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion or looseness, review freeze-frame data if available |

What the job involves
We use the platform-correct tool — JPRO (Noregon) for cross-platform work, Cummins INSITE, Detroit DiagnosticLink, PACCAR Davie4, Volvo Premium Tech Tool, or Allison DOC — rather than a generic code reader that only gets you part of the picture.
An SPN/FMI code identifies a circuit and a failure type, not a part number. We explain what the code actually means before recommending a repair.
For codes that point to a sensor or component, we test that component in circuit before replacing it — a code can be caused by wiring or a connector just as often as the part itself.
For intermittent faults, we check freeze-frame data and inspect for vibration-related wiring issues, since these often won’t reproduce sitting still in the shop.
What drives the cost
What this costs depends on how many systems the code touches, whether it’s a wiring/connector issue or a failed component, and how much diagnostic time it takes to isolate the actual cause. We tell you after we look at it, before we start.
Common questions
What does a fault code actually tell you?
It identifies a circuit and a type of failure — SPN for the system, FMI for how it’s failing. It points us in a direction, it doesn’t diagnose the part.
Why did the code come back after a shop replaced a part?
Usually because the part replaced wasn’t actually the problem — the code pointed to a circuit, and something else on that circuit was at fault.
What diagnostic tools do you use?
JPRO, Cummins INSITE, Detroit DiagnosticLink, PACCAR Davie4, Volvo Premium Tech Tool, and Allison DOC, depending on the platform.
Can you diagnose an intermittent problem that isn’t happening right now?
Often, yes — freeze-frame data and a careful inspection of connectors and wiring under vibration conditions catches a lot of these.
What does a diagnostic visit cost?
Depends on how many systems are involved and how long it takes to isolate the actual cause. We can give you a better sense once we’ve pulled the codes.
