Suspension & Steering Repair

A truck that wanders, pulls, or rides rough usually points to worn suspension or steering components — air springs, torque rods, kingpins, or the steering gear itself. We inspect the whole front end before replacing individual parts.

Symptoms we see

SymptomTruck wanders or is hard to keep straight

Likely causeWorn steering gear box, tie rod ends, or kingpins

What we doInspect steering linkage and kingpin play before adjusting or replacing components

SymptomRough ride, bottoming out over bumps

Likely causeFailing air springs, worn shocks, or a height control valve issue

What we doInspect air springs and shocks, test the height control valve

SymptomClunking noise over bumps or on turns

Likely causeWorn torque rod bushings, equalizer, or U-bolts

What we doInspect torque rods, equalizers, and U-bolts for wear or looseness

SymptomSteering feels loose or has excessive play

Likely causeWorn kingpins, tie rod ends, or steering gear box wear

What we doMeasure kingpin and linkage play against spec

SymptomUneven ride height side to side

Likely causeAir spring or height control valve issue on one side

What we doTest each side’s height control valve and air spring independently

What the job involves

We check kingpin play, tie rod ends, and the steering gear box together, since wear in any one of these throws off the whole front end and they’re often diagnosed as a group.

Air springs, shocks, torque rods, and equalizers get inspected for wear, cracking, or looseness — these wear gradually, so drivers often don’t notice until it’s significant.

If ride height is uneven, we test the height control valve on each side independently rather than assuming it’s the same fault on both.

Steering and suspension problems often show up as uneven tire wear first — see /services/truck-alignment if that’s part of the complaint.

What drives the cost

What this costs depends on which components are actually worn, how many points in the front end or suspension are affected, and whether it’s adjustment or replacement. We tell you after we look at it, before we start.

Common questions

Why does my truck wander on the highway?

Usually worn steering gear box, tie rod ends, or kingpins. We measure play in the whole system to find the actual source.

What causes a rough ride?

Failing air springs, worn shocks, or a height control valve not regulating properly. We inspect all three.

How often should kingpins be checked?

At every major PM interval — kingpin wear is gradual and easy to miss until it’s affecting steering feel.

Does suspension wear affect tire wear?

Yes, significantly. If you’re seeing uneven tire wear, it’s worth checking suspension and alignment together.

What does a suspension repair cost?

Depends which components are worn and how many. We inspect the whole front end before quoting.
