What the job involves
We test the DEF fluid itself before touching any hardware — bad fluid produces the same fault codes as a failing sensor, and swapping the sensor first wastes money.
If the fluid checks out, we test the pump, doser, and quality sensor individually to isolate which one is actually failing.
For SCR efficiency codes, we check NOx sensor readings against spec. Catalyst failure typically climbs past 400,000 miles, so a code on a newer truck usually points elsewhere first.
Connectors and lines get inspected for DEF crystallization, a common cause of intermittent faults that come and go with vibration.
What drives the cost
What this costs depends on whether it’s the fluid, a sensor, or the pump/doser, how many components in the DEF system are affected, and whether the SCR catalyst itself needs replacement or just the sensors feeding it. We tell you after we look at it, before we start.

Why is my DEF frozen in winter?
Usually a tank or line heater fault, not the fluid itself — the system is built to thaw DEF on its own schedule.

Eventually, yes — failure rates climb noticeably past 400,000 miles. Below that, a code more often points to a sensor or DEF quality issue.
